Until Mark McGwire hit the Hall of Fame ballot in 2007, no eligible non-Hall of Famer had more WAR batting runs than Dick Allen’s 435.2. The only reason Allen is not in the Hall of Fame is because many within the game didn’t care for his personality. But Allen wasn’t universally disliked. In fact, he’s an incredibly polarizing figure. Some couldn’t relate to him, but others found him to be a wonderful teammate. Who should we believe? It’s hard to tell. Rather than judging Allen, we can go by the numbers. And the numbers show that Dick Allen was an extremely gifted hitter—one of the best ever—and is very deserving of a place in the Hall of Fame. Allen reached 7.5 WAR in a season three times. The only eligible non-Hall of Famer to do it more often is Barry Bonds. People don’t just play as well as Dick Allen did and not get into the Hall of Fame.
