Due to the different opportunities presented to Black and Latino players before integration, the Hall Rating of these players does not accurately reflect their Hall of Fame cases. When possible, the Hall of Stats uses Eric Chalek’s Negro League MLEs to present an alternate Hall Rating for prominent early Black and Latino stars. Buck Leonard has a 159 Hall Rating using these MLEs. The rest of the stats on this page come from real game data, not MLEs.
|About the stats|
Over the course of his career, Buck Leonard made 2,541 plate appearances. Leonard was worth 28.5 Wins Above Replacement and 21.2 Wins Above Average.
After adjusting for length of schedule, catchers, and relief pitchers, the 28.5 WAR becomes 61.6 adjWAR. Then, WAA is adjusted by ignoring negative seasons (thus, truly capturing a player’s peak seasons) and making similar adjustments for catchers and relief pitchers. After these adjustments, the 21.2 WAA becomes 21.5 adjWAA.
Then, the adjWAR and adjWAA are combined, but with extra weighting given to adjWAA. This gives Leonard 100.2 wWAR. wWAR is then converted to Hall Rating. A Hall Rating of 100 represents the Hall of Stats borderline (similar to OPS+ or wRC+, where 100 represents league average).
Buck Leonard has a Hall Rating of 94, making him close to the Hall of Stats borderline—but still on the outside.
